The Women
Film 101

The Women

George Cukor | 1939 | 2 hr 13 min | subtitles

Play TrailerHollywood Summer NightsIMDBf-rated

The brilliant and funny Anita Loos was one of Hollywood’s foremost early screenwriters. Her biting script for THE WOMEN was based on the hit play by Clare Boothe Luce, a comedy of manners about status, gossip, and “l’amour.” George Cukor directs a fantastic who’s-who of acting talent in this all-female cast, and not a single man appears in the entire film. Filled with crackling dialogue, snappy comebacks, and fashion by the iconic costume designer, Adrian. Selected and presented in person by Temple University film professor LeAnn Erickson.

Film 101 is a series that explores elements of filmmaking, film criticism, and film theory. Each month we will present an exemplary classic film introduced by an important figure in the film community. This series is underwritten by The Vesta Fund.
